Class Conduct:

As Tang Soo Do is a traditional art, there is a strong emphasis on courtesy, respect and discipline. The background of this philosophy dates back thousands of years through oriental history and is integral to traditional martial arts. Unfortunately with many modern martial arts and fighting sports these concepts are becoming far less important. Developing an understanding of these concepts is key for progression within the art.

Tang Soo Do class conduct

Etiquette commences on entering the Do Jang with a bow. This moment allows the practitioner their own quiet moment to prepare themselves and create an atmosphere of "Jong sook" - quiet internal peace.

During class recognise seniors by bowing from the waist to about 45 degrees. Bowing to a partner shows that both are to practice for each others benefit so as to raise each others level of expertise and knowledge.

Do jang courtesy will be extended to everyday situations when communicating with a senior. It is also hoped that students will become more aware of extending courtesy and etiquette into their everyday lives.

1:On entering the Do Jang students must bow to the instructor, all foot wear should be removed.
2:On starting class students must line up with the most senior student on the far right.
3:When the instructor enters the Do Jang the most senior student must call the class to attention and bow.
4:If a student arrives late they must wait at the entrance until acknowledged by the instructor.
5:If a student wishes to leave the Do Jang they must first ask permission, and bow.
6:Salutation is an integral part of martial arts practice and much importance is placed on this and bowing during class.

Salutation portrays humility and respect to instructors, senior members and partners.
